A question was raised during the unveiling of the new Cadillac as to why engineers and designers used conventional shapes and proportions for the Lyriq when a clean-sheet approach would have allowed Cadillac to develop something completely new, free of established stylistic idioms. Nonetheless, with a tall hood, a quick and streamlined roofline, and sensuous swells along the flanks, the Lyriq is a very adventurous SUV. Where a grille would normally go, a “black-crystal” panel is installed, incorporating welcome and running lights as well as an illuminated Cadillac symbol. The lighting sequences as the owner approaches, and the Lyriq display car dazzles even more with gigantic 22-inch wheels.Cadillac claims that some of these design elements will appear in future Cadillac steeds.

Cadillac uses high-end materials and calming lighting effects, such as a light-up Cadillac crest on the steering wheel and backlit door panels, to emotionally connect you to the Lyriq. The cabin, on the other hand, is dominated by a gigantic 33-inch curved digital instrumentation and infotainment display that spans nearly the whole dashboard. The Cadillac Lyriq uses GM’s new Ultium battery system and is built on a new electric vehicle platform that will underlie future electric vehicles from the company. The revolutionary nickel, manganese, cobalt, and aluminum modular batteries were developed in collaboration with LG Chem of South Korea and may be mixed and matched based on the needs of a certain vehicle.GM and LG Chem are collaborating to establish an Ultium battery facility in Lordstown, Ohio. You may recall that GM built the Chevrolet Cruze in Lordstown before ceasing production and closing the plant. It is now owned by Lordstown Motors, which will use the deserted Cruze plant to construct an electric pickup truck unconnected to GM.

Returning to the Cadillac Lyriq, it has a 100-kilowatt-hour battery, which puts it on level with other luxury electric SUVs like the Audi e-tron and Tesla Model X. The Lyriq is compatible with DC Fast Chargers rated up to 150 kW, according to Cadillac. The new GM platform, according to Cadillac experts, properly incorporates the battery pack and its large weight into a vehicle’s base. This gives the Lyriq, a rear-wheel-drive vehicle with an optional all-wheel-drive system, a near-ideal weight distribution of 50:50. As a result, the balanced weight low in the chassis generates driving qualities that are as athletic as any GM vehicle, but can also be tailored to a driver’s preferences.
